Safety When Making Cosmetics and Perfumes

Most of the recipes in Making Good Scents™ are made with ingredients that are natural, or that are made with ingredients that occur in nature. However, there are still safety precautions you should take when making the recipes.

  • Some of the ingredients used in the recipes (such as essential oils) can be harmful if ingested. Keep all ingredients and finished products safely out of the reach of children and pets. Keep your cosmetic tools separate from your eating tools.
  • If you suspect that you are allergic to an ingredient, perform an allergy patch test. To perform a patch test, apply a small bit of the ingredient on the inside of your arm. Cover it up with a bandage. Leave it alone for 24 hours. If you see a reaction, do not use that ingredient in your products. For essential oils, do not perform this allergy patch test unless you dilute the essential oil in a base, such as a vegetable oil.
  • Many essential oil companies recommend that people who are pregnant, epileptic, who have heart conditions, or who are in a state of delicate health avoid certain essential oils. We recommend that if you fall under one of these categories that you see your physician before using essential oils in your cosmetic products.
  • The citrus essential oils (lemon, lime, orange, bergamot, tangerine, grapefruit, mandarin, etc.) make the skin more sensitive to ultraviolet light. Do not wear any product containing these oils when you sunbathe or go out into the sun for extended periods.
  • The essential oils from cinnamon and cloves can be extremely irritating to the skin. Be sure to use these oils in small amounts.
